Sure has been quiet on the group of late. Getting on Spring down my way, but most of you fellows are headed into fall and should have some modelling time. What you been doing?
When the old girls does not have work for me around the house I do get a bit of model work done. Recent project has been to maker some blower boxes for my Ill Trac Sys Class C. Bought a Kidder for $25. Looked like someone had painted it with a broom using orange road marking paint. It was a mess. Got it all stripped and disassembles. Working on updating the details that were a bit crude on the original. One such item was the blower housings. These were ventilated boxes sitting on each platform the contained motors and fans and supplied air to the traction motors below the platforms. One photo is of the prototype which someone sent to me a while back. Believe it to be taken at St Louis. Other shows the Kidder part on the left with the ones I knocked up from scratch. Primed them yesterday. Will add the rivets now. Then fill with lead shot and glue to get some weight on the platforms.
It was a fluke buy, Martin. Bought a B and a C both for $25 each from same fellow. They were a mess. Someone had tried to install trucks- unpowered- using a hammer and chain saw it looked like. There were blobs of solder everywhere. Painted with orange goo about the consistency of peanut butter, etc. Still not a bad find for $25. Lots of work required. Scored a Car Works as well, but want to get the Kidder back in working order as well.
And...the sand boxes are next project. Only had three on the model I bought. (Told you it was a mess). Will probably make four as chances of getting the forth to look just like the first three not good. Also the stock sand boxes lack detail such as the handle on the lid- sort of like the handle on a trash can lid. They also lack the ring grab and the brackets. All these little projects keep me out of the pub! I think breaking a big project- like resurrecting the Class C- into small projects makes it easier to get it all done and easier to see progress.
Well, please keep posting the photos on the Class C upgrades - I've also got a Kidder waiting in the wings that I picked up a few years ago that's being very patient....discretely sitting on the track on the layout....
