Post An autistics layout build thread.

For those here that do not know, I have Asperger's Syndome, a form of high functioning autism. I have lots of issues with anxiety, self confidence, sensory intergration issues and social issues common with the disorder. Trains of all forms, both real and model, has been my special interest since I was a young child. First with Lionel toy trains, then HO scale with brass engines and craftsman kits till my eyesite started to go south. I moved to G scale with a small garden line when my wife and I moved into my late grandmother's house. I have waffled around with what do to in my small(roughly 8 foot by 9 foot)room I have for a layout. With the donation of some framework for a shelf type layout from Tom T, along with some track and a 2 stall engine house. I plan to build a small 2 rail layout. I started this journey with the purchase of an old All Nation F7(really a late phase F3) from the widow of a modeler that loved the GN. The drive in the engine needs atleast 30.5 radius curves to run, so my exhisting 4 foot by 7 foot fold down layout will not work. It was designed for Lionel train not scale. I will repurpose the wood into its wall frame work to make shelves for my G scale trains, and mount the shelf layout below it. At first it will be a "U" shaped layout, but in time I want to make a removable section to bridge the door and closet door area at one corner and make it so I can run in circles when I just want to watch the train run. Layout will be old school in nature, 2 All Nation F units for motive power, older car kits, analog control with the only electronics being the Mars light circuits in the 2 covered wagons. I will be building in short bursts. If I get overwhelmed, I can loose interest or if I hit a wall money wise I will loose interest. I will post up more pics as time goes on. For now, here is a couple pics of my F units, the quasi F7 in GN simplified Empire Builder, and the F3 under construction(waiting on non powered wheel sets to arrive). They are sitting on the old fold down table that will be taken down soon. Mike the Aspie.

Hi,
Look at OST#10 there is a plan in there u might be interested in to get some ideas from. Personally an around the room helix would be better. Also if u make ur loops at 72 inches they could be overhead thereby giving u multidecks to work with in such a confined space from the get go.

It got put on hold while other trains took priority on funds. I also changed out motive power to a little Kemtron mogul and an NW2 that I can paint how I want it. The last one was just to nice to strip and repaint. Need either spur gear driven gear boxes or someone to replace the spit chain sprockets in this ones drive though. The Mogul runs well after some run time on blocks to "run in" the chassis, along with a fresh stack of Neo magnets from Micro Mark to replace the weak Alinco magnet in the KTM motor. Mike

So, what kind of layout track plan do you envision pursuing? Size of room, etc.?

Want a balloon?

Room is only 8 foot by just over 9 foot, going around the walls on 24" deep shelf bench work, about half the rooms benchwork was built by Tom Tee for last years Indy convention seminar then given to me by Tom (Thanks again Tom!). One module section was not fully assembled, I did that this morning. Trying to find the rest of my wall brackets so I can put up this section. I have a hutch full of books and train parts to relocate off my desk before I can install the next section. Then I will be needing to design a removable curved section to allow the door to the room to be opened, along with a closet door. Theme will be branch line with Wabash flavor to it, the Mogul, the NW 2 once its fixed and finshed. The Mogul will be the main motive power. Mike

Here is a pic taken when I put the first corner of the bench work up, the engines are cars are nolonger here. I might get a couple of the cars back later this week. The engines were just to large, and the NW2 that I had at that time was beautifully painted in PRR and I didn't want to strip it. This NW2 I can finish how I want it.
